When Agents Fail the Same Old Ways

Paul Graham's "The 18 Mistakes That Kill Startups" reads like a checklist written for a different era, but the failure modes it names are not obsolete — they have simply migrated. Founders building AI-native companies in 2025 are vulnerable to the same traps, wearing new clothes.

The Single-Founder Problem Compounds With Agents

Graham warns that a solo founder signals lack of conviction from others and leaves no one to catch bad thinking. In an AI-native company, this risk multiplies. Agents execute quickly and confidently, which means a single founder's blind spots get operationalized faster than ever before. The operating loop — task, action, eval, human review, learning — only works if the human review step has genuine critical mass behind it. One tired founder cannot provide sufficient oversight for a company where the machine outruns them before noon.

Marginal Niches Are Even More Dangerous Now

Graham argues founders pick small, safe markets to avoid competition, and those markets kill companies quietly. For AI-native founders, the trap is subtler: agents make it cheap to build something for a marginal niche, so the absence of distribution pressure is invisible until it is fatal. When software is cheap to create, the scarce thing is not the product — it is customer access and trust. Building precisely for a niche nobody cares about costs almost nothing and produces exactly that.

Derivative Ideas Do Not Survive the Eval Loop

Graham's sharpest observation may be that most failed startups make something nobody wants, dressed up in execution they are proud of. An AI-native company's eval harness will tell you whether the agent is completing tasks correctly, but it cannot tell you whether the task was worth designing in the first place. That judgment belongs to the human at the top of the loop — the founder whose job is to set goals, define what good looks like, and own accountability for the direction entirely. No workflow fixes a wrong premise.
