When Your Agents Need a CEO Too

Matt Mochary built his operating system for human organizations, but the disciplines in The Mochary Method — written decisions, clear accountability, regular feedback loops, and emotional signal as data — translate almost perfectly to the design problem facing founders whose organizations now include agents.

Write the Decision Before the Agent Runs It

Mochary insists that decisions get written down before a meeting ends, because ambiguity is where accountability dies. The same rule governs agent work. Before you deploy an agent, write out what success looks like, what the boundaries are, and how failure shows up. This is exactly the logic behind building an evaluation harness before building the agent itself. The written decision and the eval serve the same function: they force clarity before action, not after cleanup.

Accountability Cadences Apply to Agents Too

Mochary's cadence structure — regular one-on-ones, async updates, explicit owners — exists because ownership without rhythm degrades into drift. Agents drift the same way. A workflow without a feedback loop is a workflow you cannot improve. The check-in rhythm Mochary prescribes for humans maps onto the monitoring and eval passes you run on agentic pipelines: recurring, structured, tied to a named human who owns the outcome and can actually intervene.

Fear and Anger Are Your Production Alerts

Mochary treats fear and anger not as noise to suppress but as information pointing at real problems. In an AI-native company, the equivalent signal is the founder's instinct that something an agent produced feels wrong before they can articulate why. That discomfort is not a failure of trust in the system; it is the human judgment layer doing its job. The answer is not to override the feeling or blindly trust the output — it is to trace the signal back to a specific failure in context, tooling, or eval design, and fix the root cause.
