Validated Learning When the Agent Does the Building

In The Lean Startup, Eric Ries argues that startups fail not from lack of execution but from building the wrong thing with confidence — and that the cure is a disciplined loop of build, measure, and learn. For founders shipping with agents today, this argument lands harder than ever: Software 3.0 collapses the cost of building so completely that you can now be wrong at ten times the speed.

The MVP Is Still an Experiment, Not a Demo

Ries insists the minimum viable product exists to test an assumption, not to show progress. That distinction matters more when your agents can generate a working prototype in hours. The temptation is to keep building because building is now nearly free. But cheap output is not the same as validated learning. The experiment is still the unit of work. What changes is that you can run more experiments per week — which raises the cost of not having a clear hypothesis before you start, not a lower one.

Vanity Metrics Multiply With Agent Output

Ries warns against metrics that feel good but don't inform a decision. Agents produce volume: more features, more variations, more content, more code. Volume is the vanity metric of the Software 3.0 era. The founder's job is to hold the measurement standard — to decide what signal actually tells you whether customers trust the product, return to it, and pay for it. That judgment cannot be delegated to the agent producing the output. It lives with the person editing the work.

Pivot or Persevere Requires the Human in the Loop

The pivot-or-persevere meeting in Ries's framework is a moment of structured human judgment: you look at what you learned, weigh it against your original thesis, and decide whether to change direction. In an agent-driven workflow, this decision point doesn't disappear — it becomes more important, because the system can continue executing long after the underlying assumption has quietly failed. Someone has to own accountability for reading the signal, calling the question, and steering. Distribution, trust, and what's worth building remain outside the agent's jurisdiction.
