The Beachhead Market Is Your First Eval

In Bill Aulet's Disciplined Entrepreneurship, the beachhead market is not a sales tactic — it is the founder's first act of disciplined scoping, and for AI-native companies building with agents, that logic runs deeper than Aulet could have anticipated when he wrote it.

One Market, One Workflow, One Measure of Done

Aulet's twenty-four steps force founders to resist the temptation of the total addressable market and instead pick a single beachhead where they can win completely. For a founder shipping agents today, this maps directly onto workflow design: a workflow is a fixed path, and the beachhead is where you earn the right to fix that path. Trying to build an agent that serves five customer segments at once produces vague tasks, vague tools, and no honest way to measure whether anything worked.

Scoping the Agent Like Scoping the Market

Aulet treats the beachhead as load-bearing because it forces every subsequent decision — persona, full life cycle use case, positioning — to stay coherent. Tool design works the same way. When you scope a beachhead tightly, you know exactly what the agent's hands need to touch, what structured results matter, and what context to retrieve versus discard. A narrow market is the prerequisite for a narrow, trustworthy tool surface.

The Eval Is the Product Specification

Aulet's framework insists you define what winning looks like before you build the go-to-market motion. The parallel for agentic work is building the evaluation harness before building the agent itself. The red cases that break your eval in a beachhead are far cheaper to find than the edge cases that surface when you have scaled to a second segment. Discipline in market selection and discipline in eval design are the same instinct expressed in different layers of the company.

Human Judgment Holds the Beachhead

Aulet's process is not autonomous — it requires the founder to make the hard call about which beachhead to take and to own that choice. Autonomous systems still require humans to set goals, make tradeoffs, and own accountability. The beachhead decision is exactly that kind of judgment: irreducible, consequential, not delegable to an agent. Aulet's craft tradition and the AI-native company's architecture agree on this point — judgment is the thing you cannot systematize away, and it belongs at the founding choice, not downstream of it.
