When Your Team Is Half Agents, Trust Is Architecture

The insight at the heart of "Focus on Building 10x Teams" by Avichal Garg is that outsized output comes from how people work together, not from stacking raw talent. That principle lands differently now: your team includes agents, and how you design trust, roles, and feedback loops between humans and those agents determines whether you compound or collapse.

Coordination Cost Is the Hidden Tax

Garg argues that low coordination cost is what separates a 10x team from a merely talented one. In an agent-augmented team, coordination cost does not disappear — it shifts. The overhead now lives in how clearly you define tasks, scope tools, and route context. An agent handed a vague brief and a sprawling toolset produces the same drag as a brilliant hire with no clear role. Tight scopes and structured handoffs are not bureaucracy; they are the coordination layer that lets the team move.

Complementary Strengths Apply to Roles, Not Just People

Garg's point about complementary strengths is that no one person should try to cover everything. Applied here: humans should not try to do what agents do cheaply, and agents should not be trusted with what requires human accountability. The honest design question is where judgment, tradeoff, and ownership must stay human, and where execution can be delegated down into a workflow. Getting that boundary wrong in either direction wastes the team's scarcest resource — focused human attention.

Trust Is Built Through Measurement, Not Assumption

Garg insists that 10x teams run on trust earned through demonstrated reliability. For an agent, trust is not granted by default and it is not a feeling — it is a number your eval harness produces. You build the evaluation before you build the agent, let failure cases drive the design, and only extend autonomy when the measurement supports it. A founder who ships agents without evals is not trusting their team; they are outsourcing accountability to luck.
