When Your Team Is Half Agents, Trust Is the Architecture

In "Focus on Building 10x Teams," Avichal Garg argues that the legendary 10x individual is largely a myth — what compounds is a team with trust, complementary strengths, and low coordination cost. That insight hits differently when half your team members are agents, because now you have to design for trust rather than simply hire for it.

Coordination Cost Is Still the Enemy

Garg's core observation is that friction between people destroys compounding faster than any skill gap. The same law governs human-agent systems. An agent that requires constant human intervention to stay on task is high-coordination by definition. The answer is the same as it is for people: clear ownership, scoped responsibilities, and feedback loops that catch drift early. An agent with a well-defined task, tight tool surface, and a working eval harness costs far less to coordinate than a vague one with a clever prompt.

Complementary Strengths, Deliberately Assigned

Garg's 10x team is not ten identical geniuses — it is people whose strengths cover each other's gaps. In an agent-forward company, this means being explicit about which judgments belong to humans and which tasks belong to agents. Agents handle volume, consistency, and structured traversal. Humans hold goal-setting, tradeoff-making, and accountability. Blurring that line is the agentic equivalent of building a team where everyone does everything and nobody owns anything.

Trust Is Measured, Not Assumed

Garg treats team trust as something earned through demonstrated reliability over time. Agents earn nothing on faith. If you cannot measure an agent's output, you cannot trust it in production, which means you cannot delegate to it safely. Building the eval before the agent — letting failure cases drive the design — is how you create the conditions under which trust can actually accumulate between your human team and its agentic members.
